That's just me. My first choice for who take my daughter would be DH's parents if they are still alive, at least for now. That could and will change as they age of course. I don't see picking them as godparents though. And that's not an insult or anything, like they are good enough for one but not the other, it's more like logic to me. I look at godparents as who I am asking to be an influence to raise and teach my kid to be a good person.
In that respect, I definitely hope my kid has tons of godparents! I guess I'm just trying to reconcile having more than one set, considering I have only one godmother my great aunt and godfather my brother and I've never known anyone with more than one. It's also easy for me to reconcile godparents as being different from designated guardian, because again, that is "normal" in my circle. Godparents, when selected, in my circle tend to be people that are best friends, brothers, sisters, etc.
I'd want my brother to be my daughter's godfather, but I know DH would want his friend he's her kids godfather and by extension, her husband. That's when he suggested having 2 sets. If I may ask, what religion? There are lots of lovely ways to ask someone to be a Godparent as well. You can find some personalised cards as a way of asking them or send them a thoughtful poem. There can only be two witnesses to the Sacrament of Baptism. There has to be at least one Godparent a Catholic ; the second can be a witness non-Catholic , and these must consist of a male and a female. Can there be just two witnesses?
A sponsor also helps the baptized person to lead a Christian life in keeping with baptism and to fulfill faithfully the obligations inherent in it.
