We have lived in this area for over thirty years now and yet can still be stunned by the beauty of the landscape. On a quiet May day, mid week, the lake was quiet and tranquil, the odd windsurfer trying to find a breeze and the occasional sailing dinghy setting out.
We found a bench by the water's edge and had a relaxed picnic. An occasional optimistic waterbird, hoping for a piece of bread and a puff and a toot from the steam train. At one point two RAF fighters came swooping up the length of the lake, almost suspended in the air and so low that you felt that you could touch them; the sound of the engines seemed to follow a couple of seconds later. The wildlife just ignored them, even the red kite carried on soaring, and it was such a juxtaposition of nature and man - wonderful.
There are toilets and loads of places to grab a coffee or something more substantial in the town of Bala, which has a long main street, tree lined and, at this time of the year at least, relatively quiet.
There is also a 'Great Little Trains of Wales' station to visit and maybe have a ride.
