Most Taiwanese tourists come to Jiufen for shopping and eating; lots of traditional wares that are hard to come by elsewhere are readily available here. Jiufen also has great views of mountains and the ocean meeting, as it is built into the hills.
Jiufen Old Street This is almost definitely the most important and most popular of things to do in Jiufen. The old street is a time capsule of Chinese vending, with traditional foods, teas and sundries that have been forgotten about elsewhere. The winding, narrow streets bring with them local artists, boutique shops, calligraphers and more. It will be a hard place to miss — just follow the crowds. Be sure also to take note of the early 20th century architecture, one of the most distinctive qualities of the street.
It is said to be the first modern theater even built in Taiwan, constructed around by the Japanese. It lies just down the hill from the main commercial street. However, if mining is your thing, you might be better off heading to Jinguashi. Check the bus timetable here and note the last departure. Alternatively, you can book a shuttle bus tour which will take you to other places — Shifen waterfall and Shifen Old Street.
But if you are keen on visiting Yehliu, you can consider this tour: Yehliu, Jiufen, and Shifen Day Tour click this link to book. These are both great options to save time if you want to see more outside of Taipei. Jiufen Old Street itself is quite small and can be explored in under 2 hours, so definitely check out other places too if you have the time! If you want to take a taxi back, fret not — there will be plenty of taxis waiting to take you back to Taipei.
If you are planning to take the bus though, make sure to check the bus timetable here and note the last departure time so you are not stranded in Jiufen. The Jiufen Old Street is a narrow alleyway lined up with small food stalls, tea houses, souvenir shops, and pottery stores. But just go with the flow and explore any shops that catch your eyes. The most picturesque one that you is in all photos depicting Jiufen is A-Mei Teahouse. This multi-story teahouse is strategically located just a little off the main street, perched on top of a hill.
From their balcony, you can admire the picturesque view in front of you, Keelung Mountain to the right and Northern shores of Taiwan on the left. A-Mei Teahouse would be crowded, so if you want to have a tea here then you definitely need to book ahead. We went to a place with a very original name called Jiufen Teahouse.
Happy to say we were one of the few patrons there. We were seated outside at the balcony, so we were able to enjoy the view with our tea. Although it was probably not as good as the view from A-Mei, I still enjoyed my time there very much. If you like dressing up, this Qipao Rental might be of interest to you. Much like how you can dress up in a Kimono in Kyoto and Hanbok in Seoul, you can don a Qipao in Jiufen for an entire day. Taro Ball Soup is one of the most famous snacks in Jiufen. The taro balls are famous because they are the perfect chewy texture — not too soft and not too hard.
You can have it steamed hot or served cold over ice with kidney beans. It goes through most of the village. There are many visitors on the street. Along the street there are shops vending the most famous country snack of Jiufen, yam dish and various local dishes. There are some historical items well reserved.
