Which block paving sealer is best

Some manufacturers supply specialist rollers precisely for the purpose of applying paving sealants. Make sure that the sealant is worked into the joints to penetrate the jointing sand. Keep free of traffic for at least 24 hours to allow the sealant to cure.

New research is constantly being undertaken on the long term performance of various pavings both sealed and unsealed. There is some evidence that sealing a pavement can prevent damage by water ingress via the joints of elemental surfaces, such as block or brick paving, although how relevant this is to residential, low-traffic paving is debatable.

PIC has no option; they must be sealed, if only to make the colours look acceptable. We are not big fans of these sealants for normal, domestic applications, although we fully appreciate their benefits and endorse their use on public works, high traffic areas, fuel stations etc.

Whether these sealants represent a good investment for residential paving can only be determined by the client, but some will consider it a small price to pay to protect and preserve their paving. However, they can be a worthwhile investment if you are protecting valuable or 'hard-to-replace' types of paving, such as custom-manufactured blocks or PIC.

For high-load or heavy-traffic applications, they are becoming essential, and in town centres, they not only keep the paving clean, they all but eliminate the risk of damage to the jointing caused by mechanical sweepers and high-power water jet cleaning techniques. For the homeowners, the main attraction of a sealant, other than stain protection, is that the better products do reduce or eliminate any colonisation by weeds, thereby reducing the chore of regular maintenance, and they can also prevent 'mining' of the jointing sand by ants or other invertebrates.

One area of growth for sealants is in driveway refurbishment. As the number of block paved areas older than around 10 years has grown, owners have realised that seaalants offer an effective method of reducing regular maintenance, by keeping the surface clean and free from weeds.

Accordingly, a number of companies offering just such a driveway refurbishment service have magically appeared, often with grandiose names suggesting some level of professional expertise that is difficult to credit when a spotty 17 year old is blasting out all of the jointing from the driveway with a jet washer. However, when undertaken properly, there can be no doubt that a wash-and-brush-up followed by the application of a quality sealant can completely rejuvenate a tired-looking block driveway and usually at a quite reasonable price.

The key to success is to find a professional contractor who understands paving as well as cleaning, and is willing to give the project the necessary time between cleaning and sealing to ensure the very best of results. Be wary of 'cleaning-only' companies: there's a knack to cleaning paving and keeping it in tip-top condition. In summary, if a sealant is to be used on any paving, it's well worth spending a few bob extra and getting a quality product, rather than trying to do it on the cheap and then being clobbered with re-application costs in the none-too-distant future.

For small areas of staining on unsealed projects, it is often a simple task to replace individual stained blocks as and when required. Patio sealers should be easy to apply with any common brushes or rollers , dry quickly leaving a lovely finish please check some are low sheen, while others high , non toxic to your children and pets, and ideally helps to stop mould growth too. Right now is the time to tackle the block paving. Smartseal Imprinted Concrete Sealer. I decided to update this review because I used a new product recently on a clients patio. You can use the link to grab one if necessary. We applied three coats. This product is so good at keeping moisture and dirt out that you lose a little of the aesthetics you get from a wet sandstone. Is the product too good then? My view is use it. How many times have I tried cleaning sandstone, and the frequency is a real drain.

You will find cleaning and more importantly cleaning frequency reduced significantly. To give you an idea when using this product, the patio we did was about 4m by 5m. So about 20m2 in total. We got round the patio three times with a pretty generous coating each time.

It needs to be bone dry. The drier the stone, the better the absorption of the sealant, that simple. To avoid disappointing results do things right. Make sure your patio is cleaned and clear of dust. Use a quality weed killer and patio cleaner if necessary. From a price point, hard wearing as it is, and ease of application I would say this is my new favourite general patio sealer for Summer Smartseal Imprinted Concrete Sealer is designed specifically for concrete patios.

Concrete imprinted patios will with no exaggeration, begin to look like new. The sealer itself is super easy to apply and it will. It goes without saying make sure the concrete is clean and dust free. You simply brush it on with a soft broom. Wait a couple of hours and you can walk on it. Secondly, when you brush on a second coat, make sure that you can easily walk on the first coat without pulling it up.

A handy tip that! Then watch the magic. It is no exaggeration as I said before, to be amazed by the results of this product. It will make a ten year old install look like new. Very rarely do I use a product and feel overwhelmed by the results. This is a very rare product, Smartseal have really got this one in the bag.

Being as potent and quality as it is, you want decent PPE. A good face mask will help with the smell. Easily the best imprinted concrete sealer for me, a full 10 out of 10, would give it 11 out of 10 if I could…. The only product in my opinion that comes anywhere near it, is Everbuild and its sister, the Smartseal Block Paving Sealer — Matt Finish some reviews below.
